About this curriculum

Taiji (Tai Chi) offers a unique blend of slow, meditative movement and mindful practice for students seeking to improve their health, cultivate internal energy, and calm the mind. Through the integration of Qigong exercises, students develop practical tools to enhance overall well-being, reduce stress, and support long-term vitality.

Beyond its health benefits, Taiji is also a deep and nuanced martial system. Through Taijiquan training, students build sensitivity, responsiveness, structural alignment, and an intuitive awareness of an opponent through partner practice. The YMAA Taiji curriculum goes further by incorporating fast-paced solo training to develop manifesting power (發勁, fā jìng), along with martial applications and both fixed and free-style pushing hands drills—guiding students on a deeper, more comprehensive journey.

“Martial power” or "skillful force" (勁, jìng) is sometimes spelled “jìn” in martial arts contexts to distinguish it from “essence” (精, jīng). In this context, 勁 will be written as “jìng.”

Notes:
• Taijiquan ranks are represented by stripes worn on the left side of a student’s training pants. Each blue stripe represents one level, while one red stripe signifies level three (Assistant Instructor), and two red stripes signifies level five (Instructor).
• Spring 2026: All requirements, criteria, and discrepancies are presently under review by the Taiji Committee
